Mary Gavriilidou is an emerging photographer and image maker based in Naarm/Melbourne. She has recently completed a Bachelor of Design, majoring in Photomedia. Originally having a strong interest in graphic design, Mary quickly discovered her love for photography throughout the past few years at Uni.
It was only during her last semester that Mary grew fond of the creation and design process of photo books. Her latest project, Anthos, an abstract book about the coming of age and self discovery really is what sparked this newly found interest. Some images of this project can be found in GradX.
Mary also has a massive passion for creative writing, specialising in poetry, where she combines the mediums of photography, image making and writing together to form her unique storytelling. As an upcoming artist, she is always seeking to explore all fields of photography, including fashion, music and portraiture. Her love for movies expands into her photography as she has recently started photographing stills/BTS for various short films.
Through her work, Mary is extremely drawn to light, colour, composition and texture. Always experimenting with a wide range of visual styles and techniques, she has started capturing images with a more cinematic approach. Utilising detail at a small and large scale, Mary loves to create visually complex images that often invites the audience to challenge their thought process and emotions. Her bodies of work entail of deeply rooted concepts and issues to do with perspective and individuality.
