Hi! My name is Andrea Kew, a graduate of the Communication Design (Honours) Program with a minor in Marketing. Like many people, I have always had an interest in creating and making things. So, when I was first introduced to design during my Visual Communication Design unit in high school, I knew that communication design was what I wanted to pursue as a career. I enjoyed the process of solving problems and bringing my ideas to life (and still do).

Since then, I have gained industry experience as both a freelancer and having completed an internship at Swinburne’s Design Bureau. It has been insightful to put the technical skills I have learnt throughout my studies into practice! These experiences in industry and during my studies have allowed me to explore various areas of communication design, including brand identity, publication design, packaging design, photography and typography. Moving forward, I am eager to apply the skills I've developed over the years to create thoughtful designs, whether it’s through visual impact, functionality or both!

When I am not designing, you can find me listening to music or going for a swim at my local pool.

TWA Tram Wrap

I significantly contributed to the design of a tram advertising wrap for Tradeswomen Australia Group (TWA) during my internship at Swinburne's Design Bureau. With a bold, friendly and engaging design, the tram advertising wrap aimed to inspire and encourage women to pursue employment in trades. ‘Women Succeed in Trades and You Can Too’.

LSAA Conference 2024 (Visual Identity)

For the LSAA (Lightweight Structures Association of Australasia) Conference 2024, I significantly contributed to a conference visual identity designed during my internship at the Design Bureau. It centres around a photo of the Ken Rosewall Arena. The photo, together with the final concept, reflects the theme of ‘Connecting to Tomorrow’ through a focus on the cables branching out from the middle of the image included in the posters, flyer and collateral. This represents how the LSAA connects their work to solving the world’s most pressing problems through their choice of materials.

Call Me! The Typographic Expression of Eighties Pop Hits (ISTD 2024)

Responding to one of the 2024 International Society of Typographic Designers (ISTD) briefs, Joybringer, this book of vinyl singles typographically expresses that an activity that everyone should be doing to feel happy is listening to 1980s Pop Hits. From Blondie’s Call Me, Madonna’s Material Girl to Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) by Eurythmics and Dancing With Myself by Billy Idol, a range of typefaces were utilised to convey what makes these songs enjoyable to listen to!

Snack Pantry (Packaging Design)

In response to the research question, ‘How can communication design be utilised to distinguish health-conscious cracker brands from their competitors?’, an illustrative approach to packaging design, branding and collateral was explored. Snack Pantry is a healthy, friendly snack brand that has just released a crackers range for consumers who eat crackers frequently and are health-conscious.

FACET (Branding Identity)

A brand identity was designed for FACET, the French-Australian Centre for Energy Transition. The final logo reflects FACET as a multi-faceted partnership between France and Australia that focuses on energy transition by expanding three distinct programs.
