Placemaking in Glenferrie.

Undergraduate students from Business and Design backgrounds were challenged by the City of Boroondara to design a placemaking solution for the Glenferrie Road precinct in the Melbourne suburb of Hawthorn. Their solutions needed to enhance the sense of community while respecting sustainability and heritage concerns. Five interdisciplinary teams of students developed their own unique concepts to fit the brief. These concepts include:

The Glenferrie Terrace – a multi-story footpath above the ground level path that reduces foot traffic, increases road safety and allows for a greener area and aesthetic sense of place in the Boroondara region. Team: Beth Shell, Orin Giesbers, Lachlan Staciewicz, Georgia Ryan, Chloe Hondrokostas & Fraser McGill.

Garage Complex – a multifunctional garage structure to reduce traffic congestion and provide a rooftop community space for events. Team: Julia Persson, Joshua Trainor, Jake Sleeman, Mudhhi Saeed, & Corey Kain.

Railway Precinct – the redevelopment of Railway Arcade into a multi-purpose interactive Railway Precinct, with vertical gardens, seating and light panels. Team: Pip Wheaton, Joshua Henderson, Franco Melatti, Calvin Fardi Yakin & Julia Cinel.

Glenferrie Switch Park – a new park with art walls and sustainably-made play and gym equipment which can be moved by users to suit their needs. Team: Sarah Konda, Chris Pase, Grace Wilson, Luc Tunbridge & Jess Davey.

Pre-Park & Night Market – an app to increase car park efficiency and a night market to provide more space for socialising and recreational activities. Team: Ayano Nakamura, Celine Petsetas, Minh Anh Nguyen, Chloe Longo, Techchhay Keo.

Industry Partner: Boroondara City Council.
