Shene Pao

My name is Shene Pao (pronounced Shuh-KNEE)

Born in China and adopted to Melbourne when I was four years old. I initially struggled with English, which led me to express myself visually through art and craft and the means of making. A foundation that continues to shape my design approach today.

Through industry placements and my studies, I've really come to understand that communication design isn’t JUST about creating the coolest thing, but more about how we can express our ideas clearly and meaningfully, and seeing how we can solve problems through an understanding of the world we live in.

My future in design is to be curator—balancing between pushing visual boundaries, and contributing in evolving design to be more inclusive and culturally aware with my positive attitude and curiosity.

Hobbies and Fun Facts:

ᯓ★ I LOVE fashion and makeup, so I love doing cool makeup looks and scrolling on Pinterest for conceptual whimsical photoshoots.

ᯓ★ I'm exactly 5 and a half A3 landscape pages tall.

ᯓ★ I recently played a background extra on Netflix TV Shows: Apple Cider Vinegar and Superwog ;)

Shene Pao : An Introduction Video

Created using rotoscoping, After Affects and a dream, this was created as a 30 second promo about me Shene as designer. Its fun, a little silly, and it reminds me of Disney's Lizzy McGuire Show intro.

“Chinese Gardens of the Contemporary Scene” - Publication Design - International Society of Typographic Designers (ISTD)

Created for the ISTD brief on the role of gardens in our lives, this publication draws from my Chinese heritage to reinterpret the philosophy and spatial rhythm of traditional Chinese gardens through typographic design.

Confucian ideals of order and restraint are expressed through the structured grid and black English text, acting as the structural architecture of the garden as well as the publication. While Daoist harmony with nature emerges in the fluid organic movement of green Chinese text. The book unfolds like a garden walk, with die-cut gateways and historically inspired calligraphy marking each chapter. Its hand-stitched exposed binding reinforces its tactile, crafted nature.
My intended client for this project was designed for the Museum of Chinese in Australia (MOCA), it invites younger Chinese-Australian audiences to reconnect with cultural heritage through a contemporary lens.

“Open House” - Visual Identity - Studio Payne

A brief given to us to create the 2024 Open House identity, a weekend that celebrates Melbourne’s architecture by opening up buildings for the public to tour. This concept celebrates the theme of rediscovering the city through the lens of thermographic imaging. Inspired by infrared heat maps, the identity visualises how people move through and experience the city.

A fluid heat map graphic, drawn from real building data, extended across posters, digital banners, and tram wraps. The disjointed wordmark subtly references architecture, with the R and I forming a building silhouette in its negative space.

Pushing the brief further I proposed an interactive installation where thermal cameras are placed inside buildings that are part of the program. This would livestream onto outdoor screens of each respective building—turning hidden interiors into points of public engagement and conversation of how we utilise space.

“Imar Tradies Insurance” - Social Media Collateral - The Bundy Agency

1/2 of my industry placement was at The Bundy Agency, where I worked on translating brand voice into clear, engaging visuals for clients in trade tool insurance, such as Imar. I was involved in concept development, copywriting and final artwork to be rolled out on their social media platforms. Other key projects I worked on were video editing for cricket company DSC on Rachin Ravindra, as well as showreels for Arcare Retirement Homes.

“The Brownbill Effect (TBE) ” - Multidisciplinary - Sally Brownbill

1/2 of my industry placement was at The Brownbill Effect, a company that connects creatives to industry leaders by finding roles for people from designers, photographers, art directors and companies. My role ranged from administration tasks such as interacting with clients that are part of Sally's creative directory, managing the company’s website using WordPress. I also created social media content across Instagram, LinkedIn and TikTok for both TBE and Sally’s photography podcast “When Harri Met Sally.”
